Gomez-Acebo & Pombo, Abogados
In 1971, Ignacio Gómez-Acebo and Fernando Pombo, both from families with a legal, business and financial background, founded a firm conceived out of the purest Anglo-Saxon traditions, in order to offer a new quality of service to cater for the special needs of an increasingly international clientele. These international clients required a quality professional service which they found to be close to them, from the cultural point of view as well. From then on, during the history of the growth of the Firm, it has been a requirement for lawyers to have not only a solid legal training obtained at leading Spanish and international universities, but also wider capabilities in being able to conduct business in the languages of the business world. In addition, their practise has been developed in international programmes within leading law firms in important jurisdictions (US, Japan, EU, etc.). The Firm also has a structure which includes US, English, German, French and Belgian lawyers. We are aware of the high demands that we place on annual selection candidates for places at our firm, but our objectives as a firm impose those on us.We believe that a service provided without quality can only be ephemeral. A hugely important part of our organisation is therefore orientated so that each and every one of our lawyers maintains the highest level of professional training. This continuous study and professional development has meant that some of our publications have become standard textbooks in the sector, and that in certain practise areas our firm is consulted regularly at an institutional level about proposed legislative changes. We are always enthusiastic to ensure that our services carry with them a clear added value to the client, and that this is appreciated as such. To understand the client’s needs and business is a prerequisite for our lawyers, Lawyers who believe in their position as a vocation and commit themselves with enthusiasm to the business of each client, to help them in the most efficient way possible. We have always strived to participate actively in professional associations, both at a national as well as an international level. Our legal environment is nowadays subject to profound changes in which we aim to participate as leaders, not merely as spectators. We maintain a certain balance between the number of domestic and international clients. Our advice is aimed not solely at private concerns, but also to the public sector and foreign governments. The process of internationalisation and consolidation of national businesses during the 1990’s caused a dramatic increase in our national clientele. The major Spanish companies with substantial legal departments require legal services which are more and more sophisticated as well as occasionally needing an intense level of resources at short notice. One by one, leading academic professors from top Spanish Universities (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, etc.) have joined our legal teams in each of the specialist branches of business law (company commercial, civil, administrative, contentious, community and international private law). This group has been complemented with lawyers from the Civil Service practising as State Attorneys, lawyers of the Council of State, and senior judges.Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, which is recognised as a law firm with a substantial practise in company commercial, banking, contentious and arbitration law, is also well known as a leader in the areas of intellectual property, property, public law, communications, regulatory and competition law.We do not lose sight of the fact that our existence depends on the society and environment in which we operate. For that reason, the Firm has been a member of the board of trustees of the Business and Society Foundation from the outset, as well as the Lealtad Foundation, and the lawyers of Gómez-Acebo & Pombo increasingly contribute to our programme of corporate social responsibility. Also, conscious of our environmental responsibility, we are implementing an environmental management system and audit scheme in accordance with the European Regulation (EC) 761/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 March 2001 (EMAS). Therefore, the firm will be able to go further the mere fulfilment of the Law, improving its environmental performances in an ever evolving process.Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s working strategy is based on assigning a specialised team to each client, taking into consideration both the practice area and the industry sectors involved. These teams of experts, by constantly conducting research, are at all times able to offer advice that responds to and indeed anticipates each individual clients’ legislative and business requirements. We have traditionally been considered as a firm with a consolidated practice in the areas of Company and Financial Law, Litigation and Arbitration, and we have also earned an excellent reputation in Intellectual Property and Technology, Real Estate, Public Law, Communications, Regulated sectors and Competition Law.Our involvement runs deep right from the start so that our clients’ operations can achieve the best possible results.A specific team led by a partner is organised, reflecting the scope and requirements of each case and each client. Over the years, experience has shown us that this working philosophy enables us to offer preventative and personal advice adapted to the clients’ needs, bearing in mind the legal expertise necessary to resolve any particular issue. Each of our lawyers is specialised in one or more of the areas of professional practice in which we provide legal advice.
